In Our Community
We host blood drives for the American Red Cross, prepare food baskets at Christmas time through Neighborhood House. We provide volunteer time and financial assistance to, South Oakland Shelter, Neighborhood House and Haven. We have also helped build home’s in Oakland County through Habitat for Humanity.
In 2016, Abiding Presence partnered with the Raising Rochester program to help provide fresh produce for neighbors in the Rochester area. With four raised beds, the produce that is to be grown is donated to the Rochester Area Neighborhood House Food Pantry and sold at the Rochester Farmer Market.

Ketelsen Annual Fundraising Dinner
The annual Kurt Ketelsen Memorial Birthday Build is held every February. Sponsored by the Ketelsen, Newer and Burlingame families to honor Kurt (1962-2005), and with additional support from Thrivent Financial and Habitat of Oakland County this festive fund raiser has provided significant financial donations to Habitat. . This family friendly Fiesta is an evening of fun, food, games and helping our neighbors in need. It is a fitting and fulfilling memorial to a man who was a builder and who actively cared about those needing shelter.
Bi-Annual Guatemala/Cost Rica Builds
Approximately every two years a group of members have traveled to Guatemala and Costa Rica to help build homes for Habitat for Humanity.
In the Summer of 2016, a group will be traveling to El Salvador.
Abiding Presence Weekly Children’s Noisy Offering
During the Children’s Time in the middle of our Worship Service, the preschool and elementary age kids collect loose change in buckets from members of the congregation. The money is given to a charity of the children’s choosing.

Equal Exchange Coffee Sales in the Church Narthex
Abiding Presence supports the work of farmers in other countries through the Equal Exchange program. A table is set-up in our Narthex with a free will offering. Everyone visiting our building has the opportunity to help this cause.
The products we are currently offering are Coffee (12oz), Organic Fruit & Nut bars, Organic Chai Black Tea (20 tea bags), Hot Cocoa (12oz).
The key pillars of Equal Exchange’s mission are:

- Support for sustainable farming.
- To operate as a democratically governed worker cooperative.
- Encourage consumers to think about, and care about, small-scale farmers around the world.

Thursday Morning Book Study

The study group that meets on Thursday mornings at 10 am in the Conference Room begins a new series hearing lectures given by the Rev. John Shelby Spong. The recordings we will listen to come from the 25th Anniversary Farstrup-Mortensen lectures. Rev. Spong is a retired bishop of the Episcopal Church. Sometimes provocative, always stimulating, Spong encourages Christians today to rethink inherited traditions about scripture and Christian practices the strengthen the church in our own day. Join us for an interesting lecture and discussion.
