As our purpose statement attests, we are a congregation “called to serve God's world in challenging times.” Whatever your interest, you’ll find an opportunity to help others. Contact us to get involved.

God’s Work. Our Hands

On Sunday, Sept. 11, 2022, we will join over 10,000 other churches from around the country in doing work in our community.

Past projects have included neighborhood, pathway and road clean up, sewing mats and masks, and delivering Meals on Wheels.

In Our Community

We host blood drives for the American Red Cross, prepare food baskets at Christmas time through Neighborhood House. We provide volunteer time and financial assistance to, South Oakland Shelter, Neighborhood House and Haven. We have also helped build homes in Oakland County through Habitat for Humanity.

Rochester Area Neighborhood House

This non profit helps neighbors in the greater Rochester area walk a path toward self-sufficiency. A member of the congregation sits on this organization’s board of directors. In addition, the congregation regularly collects back-to-school supplies for children, donates non-perishable groceries for the food pantry, fills food baskets at the holidays, and raises fresh vegetables throughout the growing season for the hungry.

Habitat for Humanity of Oakland County

The annual Kurt Ketelsen Memorial Birthday Build is held every February. Sponsored by the Ketelsen, Newer and Burlingame families to honor Kurt (1962-2005), and with additional support from Thrivent Financial and Habitat of Oakland County, this festive fundraiser has provided significant financial donations to Habitat. This family-friendly fiesta is a fitting memorial to a man who was a builder and who actively cared about those needing shelter.

REASA – Rochester Ecumenical Alliance for Social Action

We host blood drives on a regular basis at Abiding Presence in our Fellowship Hall. Visit their website, https://www.redcross.org, and enter sponsor code: abidingpresence to sign up to give blood at our next blood drive.

Equal ExchangeEqual Exchange

Abiding Presence supports the work of farmers in other countries through the Equal Exchange Fair Trade Cooperative. A table is set-up in our Narthex for purchasing organic fair trade coffee, tea and chocolate. Each quarter, a pre-order opportunity with the Abiding Presence Buying Club occurs and offers reduced pricing. Everyone visiting our building has the opportunity to participate in on-site or pre-order purchases. Each purchase has a powerful impact on the lives of small farmers and their communities.
