South Oakland Shelter

South Oakland Shelter (SOS) provides supportive programs and resources to homeless individuals and families in need. Through partnerships with over 60 congregations, they provide temporary shelter for more than 300 families and individuals each year. SOS provides career building, job readiness skills, self-care, nutrition programs and so much more. Abiding Presence is partnering with St. Philip’s Episcopal in downtown Rochester and Rochester Church of Christ to host South Oakland Shelter the week of April 30-May 7. St. Philip’s will be using their facility to host, but we have agreed to support them with volunteers and food.

There are four major areas where we need volunteers:

  • EARLY DINNER PREP ON MAY 3 & 4: Prep for dinner at St. Philip’s. Sign up here.
  • DINNER SETUP & SERVE ON MAY 3 & 4: Set up for and serve dinner at St. Philips. Sign up here.
  • SERVE DINNER & CLEAN UP ON MAY 3 & 4: Serve dinner and and clean up at St. Philip’s. Sign up here.
  • OVERNIGHT HOSTS: Hosts are on-site at St. Philip’s as emergency contacts from late evening until early morning. These team members get to spend the most time socializing and building relationships with the guests. Sign up here.
  • TRANSPORTATION: Each morning/evening we provide transportation for guests to/from St. Philip’s and the SOS Headquarters in Lathrup Village. Sign up here.
